CAMERA HEIGHT

Be aware of perspective and its positive and negative effects when posing children. For a head-and-shoulders portrait, the camera height should be mid-face (nose height). Too high a camera position will narrow the child’s cheeks and chin; too low a camera height will distort the shape of their heads. For three-quarter length and full-length poses, the camera height should be midway between the top and bottom of the child’s body—especially with shorter focal lengths.

It sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many children’s portraits are made from the adult photographer’s standing height. It is important to get down to the level of the child, not only for proper perspective but also so that you can relate to the child on their level. Photograph by Martin Schembri.
